“Rotary is dedicated to six areas of focus to build international relationships, improve lives, and create a better world to support our peace efforts and end polio forever.” Below this opening sentence under the heading “Promoting peace,” we learn that “Rotary encourages conversations to foster understanding within and across cultures.* We train adults and young leaders to prevent and mediate conflict and help refugees who have fled dangerous areas.”
If we are to promote peace, we need to understand what is happening in the world in which we live. To that end, I am sharing a radio program broadcast in Canada, on the CBC radio network program “Ideas”.
The Anatomy of Tyranny – Timothy Snyder with moderator Paul Kennedy
Authoritarianism is on the rise around the world. And Timothy Snyder wants to push back against this tide. A history professor at Yale University who’s written widely on Europe and the Holocaust, he takes an unusual approach in his little book, “On Tyranny: Twenty Lessons from the Twentieth Century”. This episode features the lecture he gave in Toronto and a follow-up conversation with host Paul Kennedy.
* To those Rotarians who will claim this is too political, it is posted in the spirit as the words in italics state.
